Our Story

The Baldwin County Music Teachers Association was organized in the Fall of 1977. A small group of local piano teachers began to meet & talk then of its formation & how such a group could “promote interest in the study of classical music in Baldwin County,” (Article II, By-Laws, 1978-1979 Yearbook). In the Spring of 1978, they presented their first student Boys Recital, an annual event that has remained on each year’s schedule since then. By the Fall of 1978, there were eleven Charter Members led by a Steering Committee of five, a robust schedule of nine teacher pedagogical programs/meetings from September through June, and four varied student recitals from November through April, one of which exclusively featured music of Bach. The Baldwin County towns of Bay Minette, Fairhope, Daphne, Montrose, and Spanish Fort were represented on the Charter membership list. Today, BCMTA has almost doubled in membership and represents music teachers from all over the Baldwin County area with different levels of collegiate training. They collaborate on new educational tools available for their students, continue to promote and prepare students for local and state competitions, as well as host public and private recitals to enhance their performance opportunities. In 2017, BCMTA created the Gulf Coast Musicalooza camp to further the studies of their school age students in group theory classes, musical history, ear training and Master Classes to name a few. The students of BCMTA teachers benefit from the one-on-one instruction tailored to meet their individual needs in a relaxed and professional musical setting. We see growth in their maturity, managing responsibility, accepting new challenges and working through any insecurities as they develop their skill level and love for music in a variety of genres. They also develop a unique rapport with other students their ages who share similar goals and cultivate their musical talents. The rewards are timeless as they are developing skills that will last them a lifetime and are a direct benefit of your commitment to them.
